Bio
KATY ZAPPALÀ grew up in Boston, doodling with cartoons a bit. She attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland to study botany and took one life drawing class.
After settling in Santa Barbara in 1976, Katy worked at UCSB in Biological Sciences as a buyer of everything from frogs to centrifuges until she retired in 2001. Ceramics, spinning, weaving and photography kept her creative juices flowing.
On a whim, she took Cathy Quiel’s Beginning Watercolor class at SBCC Adult Ed in 2003. She has continued taking classes in Pen and Ink with Watercolor with Tom Henderson and Life Drawing and Portrait with Valori Fussell. Thanks to Adult Ed’s amazing teachers, Katy discovered a new world and passion. In the spring of 2010, Katy started Oil Painting with John Iwerks and continued with Michael Drury and, in 2016, with Tony Askew, and, in 2017, with Thomas Van Stein.
